Cricket Legend Mahendra Singh Dhoni Announced His Retirement!
Mahendra Singh Dhoni announced his retirement from international cricket on Saturday, i.e. 15th August. He announced his retirement posting a video on the Instagram handle.
“Thanks a lot for your love and support throughout. From 1929 hrs consider me as retired”, wrote Dhoni in a post on Instagram on Saturday bringing his more than 15 years international playing career to an end as an Indian cricketer.
Certainly, Dhoni is the only skipper in history to win all three major International Cricket Council (ICC) trophies — The World Cup, the World Twenty20 and The Champions trophy. India lifted the ICC World T20 in 2007 and the ICC Cricket World Cup in 2011 under his leadership. He is the first and still is the only captain till date to have won all three ICC trophies.
The 39-year-old last played in the World Cup 2019 semi-finals for India which lost to New Zealand at Old Trafford in Manchester and his comeback will be limited to IPL 2020 which starts on September 19 in UAE.
Dhoni’s Road to International Cricket:
He came into limelight in 2005 with 183 not out knock against Sri Lanka in Visakhapatnam. His trademark helicopter shot was an instant national sensation, then.
For T20 World Cup, BCCI has chosen Dhoni as the captain and the rest is history. Dhoni became ODI captain succeeding Rahul Dravid and then ascending to full-time Test-captain after the retirement of Anil Kumble.
He led India to the top of the world Test rankings. India became the number one Test side in 2009 under his leadership and Indian cricket team stayed at the top for over 600 days. He made India win 21 home Test matches which is the most by any Indian captain.
In 2014, MS Dhoni had announced his retirement from Tests and stepped down from ODI captaincy in January 2017. He is one of the finest players to have played for India with 350 one-day internationals (ODIs), 90 Tests and 98 T20 internationals (T20Is). He is the only player to captain more than 50 matches in each of the 3 formats.
Ms Dhoni Batting Records:
He has an exceptional career in international cricket. Dhoni made his international debut in 2004 and eventually, he rose high through the ranks in Indian cricket. Dhoni has scored 10773 runs at an average of 50.57 in 350 ODIs, which includes 10 centuries and 73 fifties.
In the test format, Dhoni has scored 4876 runs at an average of 38.09. He has scored 1617 runs in 98 T20 internationals at an average of 37.60, which includes two half-centuries.
He is the second wicket-keeper-batsman to touch the 10,000-run mark. Sangakkara was the first one to touch that mark. Additionally, under his captaincy, India won the 50-over World Cup in 2011 and the World Twenty20 in 2007. In 2013, in England, Dhoni made India won the ICC champions trophy.
He has been one of the best cricket keepers to play international cricket. However, runs are not only the parameter on which his performance is gauged. He is the most admired and respected cricketers.
The cricket world is mesmerized by the master strategist and ODI legend, his captaincy and wondrous hand-speed behind stumps. He is the quickest man behind the wickets and has 195 international stumpings which is the most by any wicket-keeper.
Dhoni is undoubtedly the best captain who can turn risks into something quite well with his strategies. Dhoni’s instincts rarely failed him. He leaves behind a rich legacy which is difficult to replicate by any other player.
