Keira Knightley: No More Intimate Scene Shooting By Men

Keira Knightley Hollywood actress says she is no longer comfortable for intimate scene shooting directed by men. In her conversation with writer-producer Diane Solway and director Lulu Wang on Chanel connect podcast, Keira Knightley pointed about the male gaze and her own vanity. She pointed out that if there is a story made about the journey of motherhood and body acceptance, then she would be okay with intimate scene shooting with a female filmmaker. 

The Academy Awards winner is reported to have said that she does not have an absolute ban, but she has only with men. 

Keira Knightley further shared that she does not want to be in horrible intimate scenes wherein she is all greased up, and everyone is grunting as she believes that it no longer interests her. As reported from her conversation with Chanel connect podcast, she said “I feel very uncomfortable now trying to portray the male gaze. Saying that, there are times where I go, ‘Yeah, I completely see where this sex would be really good in this film and you basically just need somebody to look hot.’ “So, therefore, you can use somebody else, because I’m too vain and the body has had two children now, and I’d just rather not stand in front of a group of men naked.” “We all empathise with men hugely because, culturally, their experience is so explored. We know so many aspects of even male sexuality. But we don’t feel like men can say, ‘Yes, I understand what you’re talking about because I’ve got this wealth of art and film and theatre and TV from your point of view.’” in regards to intimate scene shooting. 

The 35-year old actress states that it is hard for her to say anything but says that it all sounds eminently reasonable. Considering everything that she believes they have learned from the past few years about few directors and the disregard by the industry overall for women’s safety and comfort, it is more than okay that actors would want certain strict boundaries in regards to intimate scenes.

She also spoke about the impossible position some women are stuck in until they act either maternal or flirty. She was quoted saying “Before motherhood, you’re sexy, but if we talk about the whole vagina-splitting thing then that’s terrifying; there’s no sex there, so what we do is go into the virgin-mother retrofit, that’s nice and safe. The problem with those two images is I think very few women actually identify with them. Women are meant to play the flirt or the mother to get their voice heard. I can’t. It makes me feel sick.”

The most recent role of Knightley was in Philippa Lowthorpe’s Misbehaviour. She played an activist in the film who stormed the stage at the 1970 Miss World ceremony to protest for its sexism. Silent Night would be her next film, a Christmas comedy co-starring Annabelle Wallis, Matthew Goode, directed by first-timer Camille Griffin. Knightley has also spoken in the past about the clashes with male directors wherein she launched a broadside against male colleagues with an essay in 2018.
